With is famous 16th Century mosque; Kudus with its old carved teakwood houses, its strange old mosque with a Hindu – Java minaret and its kretek cigarette industry; Jepara with its wood working industry and Rembang and Lasem with their beautiful Chinese temples (klenteng) – just book a seat on a “colt” mini buse from the Semarang central terminal on the corner of Jl. M.T. Haryono and Jl. H. Agus Salim, or alternatively you can take an eastward – bound bus at the Terminal Bis across the street.
None of these places has a first – class hotel, but the Notosari in Kudus is still pleasant. If you’re visiting Rembang and Lasem, book a room in the Pati. There is also a Pesanggrahan or government resthouse in Solo, 6 km (3,5 miles) above Kudus on the slopes of Mt. Muria.
